March 2022

The beginnings of the plot, in March 2022. Cleaning up from the previous year, and removing a mint infestation!

Removing the old fence, digging up the weeds, and reclaiming as much soil as possible through sifting!

Plot is all clean!

Beginning to line the plot border with 5/4” x 6” lumber buried 3” deep into the ground. Hopefully this will keep the rats and bunnies out.

The 5/4” x 6” boards have been buried, and 2” x 2” stakes are driven 1 ft into the ground. There is a stake at each plot corner, and on the middle of each side. Each side of the plot is framed by 2 pieces, since each side is longer than the 8’ boards I bought. There will be stakes on the front side to frame out the gate.

All vertical stakes are secured now. I bought 4’ pieces which is longer than needed. Each stake is roughly driven 1ft into the ground with emphasis on being plum, not driven to an accurate depth. I did not level the ground first, so even if each stake was driven to an accurate 1ft, that wouldn’t mean the tops of every stake would line up. A string line was then laid out at 24” above the wooden path border to find a level plane, and then each stake was marked and cut to that level plane.

1” x 3” strapping is now being installed across the top edge of all the vertical stakes. These pieces will stiffen the frame, and provide a nice surface for stapling the fence material to. This cheap spruce strapping is really warped and chipped which made me wish I had bought a better material. Lumber prices are so high right now though, that I chose to go the cheaper route. A 2” x 4” was over $8!!!

Frame is all done! Now onto the fence material and gate.
